Asheville BookWorks, teaching and eating West Asheville

This past weekend I had the privilege of teaching a two-day course on flat back binding.  There were six students of varying degrees of binding skill.  This is the first time I had taught a class in a workshop setting.

For those of you unfamiliar with BookWorks, it is a fabulous letterpress and book binding studio that is open to the public.  They offer classes or all sorts and you can rent time to work on your art.

Let me just say, I love to teach!  I substitute taught elementary school for 3 years, got certified to teach K-12 art and did that for 4, then had an opportunity to teach college for 4 years.  My greatest joy is seeing students achieve knowledge or a skill they thought they didn’t or couldn’t master.  While I thought that perhaps teaching adults would be a bit different, it turns out it is not.

In the two days I taught them how to make their own book cloth, sew the French web style and bind them two different ways.  One with a case, and one without.  It was an enthusiastic group hailing from near and wide. Everyone seemed to have a great time and from all reports, they were very happy.

I’m going back there this fall and teach another class on embossed leather books.

Now, lets talk about Asheville and the food scene.  I did not take pictures of my food, I find that kind of obnoxious, but I will give thumbs up to all the restaurants that I went to this weekend.

My go to has always been The Lucky Otter.  A yummy place that does it’s own twist of a variety of burrito’s and other things Mexican.  Favorite one: The Shaka -sweet potato, mushrooms, beans, etc. with mango salsa.

Next door to BookWorks, a new kid on the block since last I visited King Daddy, a chicken and waffle place.  I did not have a chicken and waffle, but let me tell you, they offer many varieties of that. What caught my eye was the beet burger.  O my!  It was so delicious!  Also, they make their own hot sauce and one variety is beet based!  (I brought one home with me).

Saturday night the fare was Jamaican at Nine Mile!  Decided on the house dish of the night. A take on jambalaya with linguine noodles.  Ordered mine hot and boy, was it!

The last day I was there was lunch at Walk also on Haywood Rd.  Had the frittata.  Again, melt in your mouth goodness.  Now I wished I’d taken photos!!  So, if you’re driving through Asheville, stop and have a bite!  It is well worth the time.

All in all a great weekend.  Good teaching, spending time with a good friend and eating terrific food.  What more could a gal want.
